Our Founders \ Dr. Klaus Karg

Born and bred (pun intended) by bakers in Schwabach, Germany, Klaus knew he would eventually continue the tradition his grandfather and father—both master bakers—had established. But before he started working as a baker himself, Klaus pursued a formal academic education, receiving a Ph.D. in organizational psychology from the University of Nuremberg.

After this, Klaus spent the next six years as a software marketer. In 1997, he began working in the Fraenkische Dorfbaeckerei Karg (or Karg’s Franconian Village Bakery), his family’s bakery in northern Barvaria. He soon began experimenting with ingredients to create a new product: delicious, wholesome, dense and crunchy crisp breads. In 2000, Klaus introduced his Dr. Karg Flatbreads to hungry Europeans. They were received with great appreciation, and Dr. Karg crisp breads soon became the primary focus of the Karg bakery.

Klaus met George Eckrich in 2003, and after an immediate mutual admiration was established, the two discussed bringing Dr. Karg flatbreads to the United States. After initially importing the Dr. Karg crackers from Germany, they decided to create a partnership that would allow George and Carsten to recreate Dr. Karg crackers products here under a new name: Dr. Kracker. And the rest is history.

The proud father of a 14-year-old son, Klaus lives in Schwabach, Germany, where he works in his Karg bakery. His favorite cracker is the Sunflower Cheese, eaten just plain, without anything else.
